Thanksliving
I am so grateful for these things:
1. A hot, crackling fire that warms the house and calls me to curl up in front of it with a good book - or the laptop!!
2. Spending an evening playing cards, visiting and laughing with good friends. We are making a decision to do this monthly from now on. (Did you know that February is Scrabble month? And there's a variation where you use only food words? I like the idea of using a topic and having all the words fit that category.)
3. Cars that keep working, even when it's -30 degrees or lower outside. Seriously, this is such a big blessing!
4. Telephones and keeping in touch with family and friends. Even though I love letters and the written words, I would really have a hard time using only that way of staying in touch.
5. Books, books, books - and the time to read and enjoy them.
6. Re-discovering the joy of sewing after many years away from it. And getting back into accumulating piles of fabric :))
7. Kitchen appliances and all the work they do for me! From dishwashing to drying clothes, my life is way easier because of them.
8. our Bible study, The Purpose Driven Life, that our group is doing together. It's interesting, intense and so thought provoking. This is definitely the right thing to be doing at this time.

Been spending lots of time in front of this these days. Today it's -32 degrees but the windchill is -45, the lowest temperature we've had in 10 years. School buses aren't running in most districts again tomorrow. I'm staying inside!

Grampa Goes to Visit
Bob went to Calgary to see Darrin and stopped in Airdrie for a sleepover and visit with Helayna. I missed it but I'm glad Bob got a visit in with everyone down there.

It was a frosty day here and the trees looked so delicate and lacy.

Our book club met at our home this evening. It's great to gather, discuss, laugh, eat and drink together :))
These are the 3 books for January, February and March. I finished 1000 Splendid Suns today and it is an awesome read. Seriously, such good writing and an amazing story of hope amidst the turmoil that is Afghanistan (and has been for so many years).

These two were busy eating cranberries off the bush just outside our living room window. And I know, it's just supposed to be one image a day but I just had to share the sequence of him getting the berries. Anybody know what kind of birds these are? The head reminds me of cardinals but they are very grey with a bit of yellow and red on the wings and tail.

Thanksliving
It's time to write down my gratitude list after being away from it for a while. I am blessed once again.
1. Our amazing country and the freedom to travel freely.
2. My own bed with its quilts and pillows - nothing quite like one's own bed, is there?
3. Safe travels on winter roads.
4. Cell phones to stay in touch while driving and the peace of mind that they afford.
5. Fresh green and red grapes.
6. Happy mail - packages, cards and letters - I love them all :))
7. Seafood crepes - so, so yummy!
8. Mild winter weather, time to play outside and sleigh rides. Did you notice that Dolly is coming along for a ride too?! I'm looking forward to doing this with Helayna soon too.

It was so windy today! This is what the road was like in front of us. Thankfully it was sunny so there was still good visibility. It's good to be home after 3300 kilometres!

This is that new little gizmo for the computer that I told you about. It's an aircard and you just connect it to the USB port and it picks up internet service wherever a cell phone will connect. It's pretty amazing and oh, so convenient!

-45 Degrees C
with the windchill when we got up this morning in Winnipeg! We took a little roadtrip to 'Winter-peg' (if you remember the AirMiles ad from a few years ago) this weekend to check out some stuff that Bob's been investigating. My husband is such a thinker, inventor and innovator. Honestly, his mind never stops working, scheming and planning.

And it's pretty amazing when you are on Highway 1 between Moosomin and Regina, Saskatchewan typing a new blog entry! I'll show you the brand new little piece of technology that enables us to do this soon. It's the coolest thing - you'll want one of these :))

365 Project - Image of the Day

I was putting something away in the garage this afternoon when the UPS delivery person brought this amazing big box to me!
Joanna Bolick over at Tuesday's Frog very generously was giving away some Christmas RAKs on her blog and I won the very last one!! She sent me all of these beautiful things - I am blown away by all the lovely things. There's a red velvet lined basket, a round metal basket that looks like a white crown, a Designing With 2008 calendar (AND an extra one for Heather too!!!), a little tin with the most beautiful cardstock stickers, 2 sets of Rhonna Farrer stamps (which are to die for - I've looked at and admired these but never purchased them), a set of Love, Elsie alphabet stamps, an acrylic block, some Making Memories Christmas CB buttons, a Doodlebug Plain and Simple CB house (it's so sweet) and a Real Simple pad of blank grocery lists. I feel so lucky and truly thankful to Joanna for her generosity, which included sending this all the way from North Carolina! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

365 Project - Image of the Day

My sister gave me these beautiful serving pieces for Christmas. A lovely rectangular tray (7 X 17") is perfect for serving jelly rolls (which she brought for dessert) and 3 little bowls with spoons on another tray will be welcome additions to my china cabinet. Thanks, E!!

The master of packing put all of these piles of stuff
into 2 bags last night and then she took them and left for Halifax. Mel arrived there early this morning and by tomorrow afternoon will be on her way to Poland, where Tyler is eagerly waiting for her! Hopefully the big winter storm in Atlantic Canada will be over by tomorrow afternoon and she can safely head back home. It was marvelous to have her here and we miss her already :(

365 Project - Image of the Day

Have you ever tried to defrost your deep freeze when it's -15 degrees Celsius outside - and the freezer is in the garage?! That was me this week! It took a few hours and several pans of warm water but I did get it accomplished. And then I repacked the freezer with 800+ pounds of frozen beef, which should last us a very long time. We had a roast today and it was very delicious. Such a good feeling to know that we raised this beef and know exactly how it was produced (on grass with a little grain, no hormones or drugs at all).

Breakfast Nest Eggs
from Vegetarian Times, Jan. 2007
(love going through old magazines and finding new recipes to try!)
6 slices whole-wheat bread, crusts removed
4 medium chopped mushrooms (about 3/4 cup)
1 green onion, thinly sliced (about 2 Tbsp.)
1 Tbsp. chopped tarragon (fresh is awesome but I only had dried)
6 large eggs
1/3 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1/2 tsp. paprika
Adjust oven rack to lowest position. Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
Coat 6 6-oz. ramekins (those little custard cups) with cooking spray and place on cookie sheet.
Flatten each bread slice with rolling pin to 1/8 inch thickness. Line prepared ramekins with bread slices, pressing against bottom and sides (may extend over the top).
Combine mushrooms, green onion and tarragon in small bowl. Season with salt and pepper and divide among ramekins. Break 1 egg carefully into each ramekin. Top with cheese and paprika. Season with salt and pepper.
Bake 20 to 25 minutes, rotating pan after 10 minutes, or until whites are completely set and yolks begin to thicken (or to your preference). Longer baking will produce hard-cooked yolks. Cool on rack for 2 minutes, then unmold and transfer to serving plates. Garnish with tarragon leaves, if desired.

365 Project - Image of the Day

744 photos came home from Costco in those little boxes yesterday. Today I've been organizing and putting them into albums. It's so nice to look through them and reminisce about our adventures!

Birthday Party
It's Bob's birthday tomorrow, so last night we gathered for a surprise party. Bob had no idea it was planned, even though there were several comments that nearly gave it away!
While waiting for supper, Grampa gave a few piggyback rides.
It was Helayna's first time having lobster and she even helped herself to one of the pieces.
Naomi and Jerry did a lovely job of hosting and cooking supper. Mel cooked the lobsters and everyone enjoyed a great feed. There was even 1 lobster left - and Bob enjoyed it for lunch today!

Meadow helped Grampa take all the candles off the cake - and then she proceeded to lick lots of icing off the corner piece, one fingertip full at a time!

We had fun playing Sequence later too. It was truly a family celebration and the first time since last summer that our kids have all been together. We really did miss Tyler though - he arrived back in Poland yesterday afternoon and is busy studying for exams this week.
